The quiet rise of story-first mobile RPGs

April 21, 2026 · Markus Keller

Mobile RPGs used to mean endless menus and tap-to-win combat. But a crop of indie titles has started leading with actual storytelling, and the results are better than a lot of console fare.

Emberhold Saga is the one that convinced me. Its companions remember your decisions and react in ways that change later chapters. That's expensive to write and most big studios don't bother on mobile.

The combat in these games is often deliberately simple so the writing can breathe. I'm fine with that trade. I'd rather replay an act to see a different outcome than grind the same fight for gear.

If you like narrative games, don't skip the indie RPG shelf just because it's on your phone.
